五、阅读理解(共25分)
  本部分有两篇短文,每篇短文后有五个问题,每个问题有四个供选择的答案。请选择一个最佳答案。
Passage 1
It is a matter of common observation that although incomes keep going up over the years, we never seem to become much better off! Prices are rising continuously. This condition is called one of inflation; the money supply is becoming inflated so that each unit of it becomes less valuable. We have grown accustomed in recent years to higher and higher rates of inflation. What could be bought ten years ago for one dollar now costs well over two dollars. Present indications are that  this rate of inflation is tending to rise rather than to fall. If in the real world our money incomes go up at the same rate as prices one might think that inflation does not matter. But it does. When money is losing value it lacks one of the qualities of a good money — stability of value. It is no longer acceptable as a store of value; and it becomes an unsuitable standard of deferred(延期的) payments. Nobody wants to hold a wasting asset, so people try to get rid of money as quickly as possible. Inflation therefore stimulates consumers spending and holds back saving.
1.According to the passage, inflation is a situation in which ______.
A.money increases in its value
B.money keeps losing its value
C.it s always easy to find better paying jobs
D.employment remains to be a problem.

A.invest more money on the stock market
B.buy a lot of cheaper goods or articles
C.save as much money as they can
D.would rather spend money than save it

Passage 2
A strict vegetarian is a person who never in his life eats anything from animals. The main objection to vegetarianism(食素主义) is the difficulty of getting enough protein — the body-building element in food. If you have ever been without meat or other animal foods for some days of weeks you will have noticed that you tend to get physically rather weak.
Proteins are built up from approximately twenty food elements called “amino-acids”(氨基酸), which are found more abundantly in animal protein than in vegetable protein. This means you have to eat a great deal more vegetable than animal food in order to get enough of these amino-acids. A great deal of the vegetable food goes to waste in this process and there is not much to be said in favor of life-long vegetarianism.
The economic side of the question, though, must be considered. Vegetable food is much cheaper than animal food. However, since only a small amount of the vegetable protein is useful for body-building purpoeses, a consistent vegetarian, if he is to gain the necessary 70 grams of protein a day, has to consume a greater bulk of food than his digestive organs (消化器官) can comfortably deal with. In fairness, though, it must be pointed out that vegetarians claim they need far less than 70 grams of protein a day.
6.We feel weak when we go without meat and other aniaml products ______.
A.unless we take plenty of exercise
B.unelss we are reducing our food intake
C.because vegetables do not contain protein
D.because we do not get enough protein

A.various fats and sugars
B.about twenty different amino-acids

D.approximately twenty different vegetables

8.According to the passage, life-long vegetarianism may not be good because ______.

B.it results in the waste of a lot of food
C.the body must process too much waste
D.vitamin-deficiency diseases may result

A.vegetable food is cheaper
B.it is good for the digestion
C.animal food is less expensive
